Seafood and Whiskey in Galway City
After a few hours spent at the Burren, our tour bus continued on to the lovely Galway City. A city with only about 80,000 people, it sits right on the Atlantic Ocean (Galway Bay) on the west coast of Ireland, known as the Wild Atlantic Way.

Getting to Galway
The closest major airport to Galway is in Dublin. There are also smaller airports in Shannon and Cork. Galway City is roughly 200 KM from Dublin.
Rent a Car
Dublin Airport offers many of the major car rental companies so there are tons of options. If you are looking to see more than just Galway or create your own Irish road trip then this is a great choice! Hertz is my personal favorite.
Via Train
You can take the train via Irish Rail from the Dublin Airport to Galway. Prices may vary depending on demand.
Via Tour
This is of course, how we got to Galway. We booked our tour through Paddy Wagon Tours. I would also recommend Viator! They have great half-day or full-day tour options that include the Cliffs of Moher and Galway.

Eat and Drink
We only had a few hours to explore the city but we simply fell in love. The vibe of the city and setting meshed perfectly with our personalities and travel style. Everything was lively, upbeat, happy and diverse. Our favorite things about Galway was it’s seafood and pubs!
We started by wandering around downtown Galway where we encountered many restaurants, pubs, shops, and street performers! We stopped at The Kings Head to try some fish and chips (photo below 👇🏼). Many visitors seem to forget that Ireland is one big island… surrounded by tons of water… with lots of seafood to be caught! And the Irish do a nice job with preparing amazing seafood 😍
Wander and Explore
Then, we continued on toward the water to take in the lovely view of the bay. This was worth the walk – be sure to make time for this! The view is really nice. There are tons of restaurants down by the water that are worth visiting and checking out.
On our walk back we made a stop at the award-winning whiskey bar, Sonny Molloys, for a few drinks. Most of the pubs had street seating and even though it was a bit chilly the setting was too perfect not to enjoy the outdoors plus the people watching was top notch. But getting a seat outside was difficult due to the popularity of the street so make sure to keep an eye out for a good spot and grab it ASAP! There are tons of pubs to choose from downtown so you really can’t go wrong.

I haven’t been to Galway yet but can already feel its vibe from what you have written! This cool city is now officially on my list!
It is refreshing to see a travel blog cover something else in Ireland than Dublin. I am not a big fan of sea food, but lord I would love to try some Irish Whiskey 😂 Looks like an amazing trip! BTW, is your fish and chips served with avocado or what is that ?
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the article 🥰
Haha the green stuff is actually mushy peas- not our favorite thing on the plate. The fish was amazing!
I’ve only been to Europe once so far – I went to Spain – but I hope I can make it to Ireland one day, too! It looks gorgeous.
Sounds like a great place to visit I’ve heard good things about Galway.
